Perth dentists agree: these crucial mistakes could be sabotaging your dental health.
We provide a full range of dental health services in the Perth area. Many of our patients start out as emergency cases and like us so much they depend on us for regular care. Regular dental care, though, is only half of the equation. The other half is that you need to “take care of business” on your end. Here are some crucial mistakes that can have a negative effect on your dental health.
DIY Dentistry
The rise of social media has been great in many aspects, but there is a “dark side”: too many well-meaning people provide terrible “advice” but do it convincingly enough that people try the things they suggest. The main offender is DIY teeth whitening. Even a natural product such as hydrogen peroxide can harm your enamel if used incorrectly. Make sure to only use ADA approved products on your teeth.
Acidic Juices and Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar, orange juice and water with lemons are the main offenders here. If you drink any of these, rinse out your mouth immediately with water. Don’t brush your teeth without rinsing first or waiting 30 minutes for the acids to find their way into your body. Acetic acid from the vinegar and citric acid from the fruits can both damage your enamel.
Deficiency of Vitamin D and Calcium
You need at least 1,000 mg of calcium and 400 IU of Vitamin D per day. Calcium can come from food or supplements. Vitamin D can come from food, supplements and sunlight. Make sure you get enough of both.
Failure to Keep Regular Appointments With Your Dentist
Here’s the bottom line: you need a checkup every six months. This will avoid you needing emergency dental services in-between visits. We know Perth is a busy place, but find time to go to the dentist.
